Dr. Frank Serebour,
President, Ghana Medical Association (GMA),
Dear Dr. Serebour,
Re: Displeasure at the GMA's Position on Non-Participation in the Organized Labour Strike Against Illegal Mining (Galamsey)
I trust this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with your unilateral decision to announce the Ghana Medical Association’s (GMA) non-participation in the recent organized labour strike against illegal mining (galamsey) and its devastating health and environmental consequences. This decision, taken without consultation with the National Executive Council or the General Assembly, undermines the collective will and integrity of the GMA.
Galamsey has been identified as an existential threat to the well-being of our nation, with significant implications for public health, the environment, and the future of Ghana. As medical practitioners, we cannot afford to remain silent in the face of a crisis that affects every Ghanaian. This is not a matter that should be politicized or trivialized. The poisoning of our water bodies, the destruction of arable land, and the looming health crises linked to mercury contamination, lung diseases, and other life-threatening conditions make it abundantly clear that galamsey is a national emergency.
It is disheartening to see that the GMA, under your leadership, is being used to advance political interests rather than addressing the real concerns of health professionals and the people we serve. Your known affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) raises concerns about whether your decision was motivated by partisan considerations rather than the genuine welfare of Ghanaians. As you are aware, the health consequences of galamsey are no respecter of persons. The very water that we all rely on—presidents, doctors, and everyday citizens alike—is being contaminated.
As President Akufo-Addo himself has said, "Galamsey is the greatest threat to our future survival as a people"—a threat that extends not only to the poor and vulnerable but to you, your family, and indeed every member of society. It is incomprehensible that in the face of such overwhelming evidence, the GMA would choose not to lend its voice to the fight against this menace. We, as members of this association, have a duty to stand up for the health of the public, irrespective of the political climate.
Your statement has not only alienated many of us but has also put into question the independence and integrity of the GMA. I call on you to reconsider your position, retract the statement, and ensure that the GMA reflects the collective voice of its members. We must not allow politics to silence our duty to protect public health and advocate for a sustainable environment for future generations.
I look forward to seeing the GMA take a stronger stance on this critical issue and involve all relevant stakeholders in decision-making processes moving forward.
Sincerely,
Dr. Prince Amoabeng Aggrey
Medical Practitioner, GMA Member
